OnePlus has entered the field of artificial intelligence by introducing a new tool called AI Eraser that allows users to edit photos and remove unwanted elements from them.
The new feature is expected to be available on a number of OnePlus smartphones, including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE4.
This feature will be available in all regions where these devices are officially available for purchase. However, devices in Europe will not get AI Eraser until the later part of the second quarter of 2024, before the end of June.
Owners of OnePlus phones can utilize this feature by selecting the parts in the image that they need to remove by highlighting them.
These parts could be random people, discarded litter, or flaws in the image.
Then, artificial intelligence analyzes the area to create a background that OnePlus claims blends seamlessly with the current image.
This approach is reminiscent of how tools like Adobe’s content-aware fill and Google’s Magic Eraser work.
This feature marks a new project for OnePlus, relying on its own large-scale linguistic model to power AI Eraser.
The company stated in its release: “AI Eraser, as the first AI-based feature from OnePlus, is a first step in our vision to empower user creativity through artificial intelligence and revolutionize the future of photo editing, enabling users to create stunning images with just a simple touch.”
They also highlighted that they see generative artificial intelligence across mobile devices as having great potential and the ability to bring a complete shift in productivity and creativity. They have plans to introduce additional artificial intelligence benefits this year and look forward to making them available in the future.
It is not clear whether this feature will be available through an OxygenOS update or an update to the OnePlus Photo Gallery app. It is also not clear at this stage whether the artificial intelligence processing will occur on the device itself or require an internet connection.
