The Chinese technology company Meizu has announced its intention to make a significant change in its strategy by deciding to stop developing new smartphones and instead focus on artificial intelligence.
The company is currently focusing on developing “future devices” that rely on artificial intelligence and adopting a strategy known as “AI in Everything”.
Xingji Meizu Group’s CEO, Shin Zuo, announced that the company has successfully transformed from being a mobile phone manufacturer to developing a comprehensive system of devices, including the augmented reality glasses offered by its subsidiary brand, MYVU.
Shin also pointed out changes in the smartphone market, such as consumers continuing to use their devices for longer periods before upgrading, and increasing similarity in performance between different phones in terms of smoothness, camera quality, and operating system features.
He indicated that innovation in smartphones has become limited, leading the company to halt the development of future releases of its phones like the Meizu 21 Pro, 22, and 23.
The company shifted its focus from developing strong-selling MP3 devices to smartphones several years ago, and now it is entering the field of artificial intelligence after a period of preparation, team building, and resource consolidation.
The company plans to release a smartphone operating system this year relying on artificial intelligence, while affirming that its current products and services will not be affected by the strategic shift in its operations.
