Andrej Karpathy announced his decision to depart from OpenAI. The renowned researcher and co-founder of the prestigious artificial intelligence company stated that it was the second time he had left the company, clarifying that his departure was not caused by any incident or issue.
Karpathy initially worked at OpenAI between 2016 and 2017 under founders who later turned into competitors. He then left the company to join Tesla under Elon Musk’s leadership from 2017 to 2022 as the head of artificial intelligence.
He led the team responsible for self-driving features at Tesla, then departed in 2022 to rejoin OpenAI about a year ago.
Karpathy has built a large audience on social media, where he shared inspiring articles about the field of artificial intelligence, along with videos explaining the inner workings of this emerging field.
Karpathy stated, “I left OpenAI. At first, nothing happened, and it wasn’t due to any specific event or issue.”
He added, “My time at OpenAI over the past year has been fantastic, the team is strong, colleagues are great, and the future plan is extremely exciting, and I believe we all have a lot to look forward to. My immediate plan is to work on my personal projects and see what unfolds. Perhaps those who have followed me for a while have an idea of where things might be headed.”
Karpathy’s departure came after an unstable year at OpenAI due to the brief removal of Sam Altman from the CEO position before returning to the role in a week filled with dramatic events.
The company stated that Karpathy’s responsibilities have been transferred to another researcher whose name was not disclosed. The company spokesperson announced in a statement: “Karpathy has decided to leave to pursue his personal projects. We are very grateful for his contributions and wish him success. His responsibilities have been handed over to a senior researcher who has worked closely with Karpathy.”
Karpathy updated his resume on the X platform, where his previous resume indicated that he was working on building a type of Jarvis at OpenAI, suggesting his involvement in a project related to artificial intelligence assistants at the company.
Earlier this year, Karpathy explained the reason for naming his project JARVIS, expressing his desire to coin a term that represents useful and conversational artificial intelligence.
