The first Artificial Intelligence center for Arabic language processing, named “Arabic Intelligence Center,” was inaugurated in Riyadh through the King Salman Complex for Arabic Language. This project was supported under the guidance of the Minister of Culture, Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, with the aim of developing the Arabic language locally and globally using Artificial Intelligence technologies. The opening was attended by representatives of linguistic institutions and personalities from inside and outside the Kingdom.
Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, the Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Complex, explained that the “Arabic Intelligence Center” is the first center specialized in Artificial Intelligence processing for the Arabic language. It will contribute to enriching Arabic content in the fields of data and Artificial Intelligence, supporting research and applications related to Artificial Intelligence and the Arabic language. The center will also contribute to achieving the goals of the national data and Artificial Intelligence strategy and the Kingdom’s vision 2030 for global leadership in this field.
The establishment of the new center is part of the Complex’s efforts to develop computational linguistics, which includes creating linguistic resources and computer tools used for automatically processing the Arabic language using Artificial Intelligence techniques, with the aim of competing with other languages in systems and computer applications.
The vision of the “Arabic Intelligence Center” focuses on presenting the Arabic language innovatively through the use of Artificial Intelligence, aiming to provide comprehensive services to empower individuals to use Artificial Intelligence technologies to enhance the Arabic language locally and globally.
The center will offer a variety of services, such as technical and linguistic consultations, workshops in the field of linguistic processing with Artificial Intelligence, supporting researchers by providing paid licenses, supporting outstanding studies, and contributing to documenting data for various research purposes.
The center aims to develop and enhance the standards and regulatory frameworks of the Arabic language automatic processing system, stimulate the production of high-quality research and innovations in this field using machine learning, develop useful and valuable applications in this field. The center also aims to qualify competencies according to global standards, enhance knowledge in the field of Arabic language processing, provide necessary data to serve the Arabic language, and develop strategic partnerships to achieve its goals.
The “Arabic Intelligence Center” consists of five main departments: the Artificial Intelligence Lab, which works on utilizing Artificial Intelligence techniques in developing and processing the Arabic language to achieve high computational levels. The Data Preparation Lab, which collects and classifies Arabic data, whether written, audio, or visual, ensuring its quality.
The Speech and Visual Lab, which focuses on recording, storing, and processing audio and visual data. The Virtual and Augmented Reality Lab for developing Arabic software using Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies. Finally, the Researchers Lab that provides office spaces for researchers in all specialties to conduct their research on Arabic language computing.
The launch of the King Salman Global Complex for Arabic Language by the center reaffirms its strategic role in serving the Arabic language, especially within the framework of the Human Capability Development Program and achieving the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The Complex aims to promote the Arabic language and fully utilize its service opportunities, including supporting artificial intelligence and its applications to give Arabic language a competitive edge compared to other languages.
