Advancements in artificial intelligence technologies in the field of medicine continue, with many hospitals around the world starting to implement artificial intelligence to assist doctors in diagnosing breast cancer.
Hungary was one of the largest and first countries to use this technology, as at least 5 hospitals and clinics started applying the technology and performing thousands of breast cancer screenings annually through artificial intelligence programs as of 2021, according to the New York Times.
The success of using smart technology in detecting cancer in Hungarian clinics prompted doctors in England, Scotland, and Finland to also experiment with this technology, as stated by the newspaper.
In a study published last year on the ability of artificial intelligence program to detect breast cancer in 250,000 scans, it was found that this technology is effective and its image analysis capability is faster than that of human radiology specialists.
The study showed that integrating technologies in the field of medicine can reduce the burden on radiology specialists by having an automated system capable of providing a second opinion quickly and accurately.
Companies have been developing these programs for years, as current artificial intelligence technologies are advancing and becoming more capable of performing tasks of higher complexity.
One doctor said that artificial intelligence can help avoid errors resulting from human fatigue, as radiologists can perform precise examinations during long working hours.
Another person expressed astonishment at the effectiveness of artificial intelligence programs after presenting their most challenging professional cases to the program, and the program accurately detected the cancer each time.
Nevertheless, many doctors and artificial intelligence experts affirm that artificial intelligence technology will never replace doctors, but rather will be used as a means to complement healthcare. For example, doctors can evaluate the results of cancer screening tests, and then artificial intelligence system can be used to verify any details that may have been overlooked.
