OpenAI announced its first collaboration with a higher education institution, where Arizona State University will have full access to ChatGPT Enterprise starting from February.
The partnership began forming six months ago, when Mike Crow, Chief Information Officer at Arizona State University, visited the main headquarters of OpenAI.
The ChatGPT chatbot and other AI technologies have been previously used by faculty and staff members at the university.
The ChatGPT Enterprise subscription is designed to provide users unrestricted access to GPT-4, enabling twice the performance speed compared to previous versions, along with an API credit balance.
Through the collaboration, Arizona State University plans to create an AI tutor for students tailored to specific courses and study subjects.
Crow emphasized that subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are the main focus and essential in higher education.
The tool is also used in the Freshman Composition course at Arizona State University to assist students in writing skills.
Arizona State University is also leveraging ChatGPT Enterprise for developing avatars using AI, considering it a creative partner in researching specific topics, such as robots capable of singing or writing poetry in the field of biology.
Crow announced that the demand for the engineering course at Arizona State University has made it one of the renowned courses within the university, not limited to engineering students only.
With ChatGPT Enterprise in hand, students will face no usage restrictions.
After discussions with OpenAI leadership, Crow expressed full confidence that the tool works to provide a safe and secure environment protecting students’ privacy and intellectual property.
OpenAI affirmed that using Arizona State University’s inputs in ChatGPT is secure and that the company does not utilize this data in any of its model training processes.
OpenAI expressed interest in learning from Arizona State University and expanding the use of ChatGPT in higher educational institutions.
The collaboration between faculty and staff at the university enables tapping into the advanced capabilities of ChatGPT chatbot to enhance the teaching and learning process.
Although AI chatbots faced criticism last year due to concerns of manipulation, both Arizona State University and OpenAI are confident that their collaboration will be beneficial for students and the institution.
Relying on ChatGPT, the AI model provided by OpenAI, hundreds of companies are using this model.
