China intends to emerge as one of the world’s leading countries in the field of innovation in artificial intelligence by 2030, keeping pace with advanced countries in this sector in terms of theories, technologies, and applications. The industry associated with artificial intelligence is expected to exceed one trillion yuan (approximately $140.9 billion USD), leading to the growth of related industries to over ten trillion yuan.
The Chinese government has implemented a set of positive strategies to encourage the growth of artificial intelligence, including research and development, supporting practical applications, and industry development. Various regions and cities in China have seized the promising opportunities in advanced artificial intelligence models, hastening the establishment of self-technical systems in artificial intelligence and driving its industrial development.
Beijing, the capital of China, has emerged as a conducive site to establish a global influential center for innovation in artificial intelligence. It is distinguished by its high expertise, exceptional innovation capabilities, and active environment for developing artificial intelligence products. Official statistics reveal that 28% of a total of 2,200 active companies in the field of artificial intelligence in China are concentrated in Beijing, making it a leader in the number of these companies nationwide.
Last year, Beijing revealed its strategic plan for developing the artificial intelligence field, aiming to increase the core artificial intelligence industry’s value in the city to approximately 300 billion yuan by 2025. This implies maintaining an annual growth rate exceeding 10%.
Currently, efforts continue to strengthen technological partnership relations between regions and cities, including various areas such as Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Sichuan. For instance, the city of Shenzhen is planning to establish a national leading area specialized in innovation and the development of artificial intelligence technologies, focusing on projects to produce and creatively develop products based on internationally recognized principles and models.
Information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicates that the market value of the core sector of artificial intelligence technology in China has reached 500 billion yuan, with an approximate count of over 4,300 institutions operating in this field.
In this context, Liu Ching Feng, Chairman of the Board of “AI Flightek,” mentioned that artificial intelligence can drive deep integration between digital technologies and tangible economy, creating new industries, innovative patterns, and new developmental impetuses in the sector. He pointed out that China has achieved international competitive advantages and capabilities in vast audio modeling and major medical modeling areas.
However, some experts have noted a persistent gap between China and several other countries regarding fundamental algorithms, technical equipment, core software, and the work environment related to this sector. This necessitates collaborative efforts among scientific, technological, and industrial sectors to advance technological progress and industrial transformation, preparing a generation of highly skilled creators.
Dai Chiong Hai, who leads the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, stated that China has a large market for artificial intelligence applications. Nevertheless, the country remains weak in terms of basic technology and human capabilities.
Dai emphasized, “It is essential to focus on developing competencies, paying more attention to basic scientific research and creative innovation in the field of artificial intelligence, by improving policies, amending procedures, and increasing budgets.”
