Apple seized the Canadian company DarwinAI earlier this year aiming to form its own artificial intelligence team, as reported by the American agency Bloomberg.
DarwinAI actively worked on developing artificial intelligence technologies specializing in component analysis during manufacturing phases, and also focused on designing integrated artificial intelligence systems known for their high efficiency.
Following Apple’s acquisition of the company, DarwinAI ceased its website operations and closed its social media accounts.
A number of employees from a Canadian startup joined Apple’s artificial intelligence team, and Alexander Wong, one of the co-founders of DarwinAI and an expert in the field of AI, was appointed as a manager of one of the teams within Apple’s AI department.
The company confirmed the purchase through a brief statement reflecting its usual approach when asked about acquisition deals, saying: “Apple tends to acquire small companies from time to time, but does not disclose the purpose or future plans.”
Apple is striving to develop and introduce advanced features in the field of artificial intelligence within its new operating systems, such as iOS 18 and macOS 15, to compete with major companies like Google and Microsoft, among others. Integrating AI technologies within the range of applications and services provided by the company is also essential.
Apple is working on developing the use of AI features within devices independently from external server networks, to safeguard user privacy and information security, as well as reduce operational costs. Collaborating with DarwinAI in developing efficient and integrated AI systems to achieve these goals may resemble the approach taken by Google with its Gemini Nano technology.
