Discord platform has announced the discontinuation of the experimental AI chatbot Clyde in less than a year from its initial launch. The platform stated in a support statement that Clyde will be discontinued by the end of the month, thus users will no longer be able to use it in direct messages, group direct messages, or server chats starting from the 1st of December.
Earlier this year, the platform first tested the AI features of the chatbot named Clyde.
OpenAI models were used in the Discord application to enable the chatbot to respond to questions and conversations with platform users.
Since then, limited tests have been conducted on the chatbot, and the platform plans to make it an integral part of its chat and community application.
Clyde’s goal was to function as an AI assistant accessible directly from within the server, allowing users to interact with it for entertainment purposes, and to request playing games.
The sudden closure of Clyde is not known, and Discord did not specify the exact reason for the closure. Despite complaints from some users in the following months after its release, where they were unable to access their chatbot’s private servers.
The AI chatbot may return in the future as a paid feature for Nitro users only, or perhaps Discord has gained enough knowledge during the testing period and deemed that it does not need to integrate the AI chatbot into its service.
Kelvin Sloan, Discord’s Product Communications Manager, stated: “The intelligent chatbot Clyde is of great importance as an experiment we have successfully applied to a few servers.”
Sloan said: “Discord continuously works on delivering new features and experiences to users. Clyde is one of these experiments, and we look forward to unveiling new experiences for users in the future.”
I have tried Discord and benefited from a variety of AI features, including creating smart summaries of conversations.
This feature allows users to catch up on conversations they missed, and is particularly useful for servers spanning different time zones.
Discord also aims to make its platform a hub for AI developers, providing financial resources to help developers in developing AI applications for the platform.
