Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who has invested billions of dollars in developing artificial intelligence, expressed his concerns about the potential risks of technology. In a statement at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Musk predicted that there is a “10 to 20 percent chance” scenario in which artificial intelligence could destroy humanity.
However, Musk also encourages people to look positively despite the possibility of destruction. Musk said, “The glass is 80% full. Look at the bright side.”
Musk often warns that uncontrolled developments in this field could lead to human destruction. He recently reiterated his opinion, stating: “I tend to agree with Jeff Hinton, one of the founders of artificial intelligence, who believes there is a 10-20% chance of something serious happening.” as reported by DailyMail.com.
He previously warned that artificial intelligence could be “one of the greatest threats to humanity.” However, he also says that the potential benefits of artificial intelligence outweigh the risks.
He believes that the most likely outcome is abundance, where goods and services will be available to everyone, making work optional. However, he also warned that this could lead to an “existential crisis” for humanity. “If artificial intelligence can do everything you can do but better, what’s the point of doing anything? I think there will be an existential crisis.”
Despite the grim forecasts, Musk encourages people to remain optimistic. He stated: “We live in the most exciting times in history and we must enjoy the journey.”
Although Musk considers artificial intelligence a existential risk, he continues to invest in artificial intelligence projects such as xAI and robotic systems like Tesla Optimus. The company xAI, launched by Musk, aims to create an artificial intelligence chat robot named Grok. In June, xAI completed its first financing round of $6 billion, bringing its total valuation to $24 billion.
Musk is developing a humanoid robot named Optimus, created by Tesla, which may one day be able to perform manual tasks.
Musk is facing a lawsuit from a group of Tesla shareholders who claim he deliberately transferred talents and resources from Tesla to xAI. However, he remains committed to making X a platform for freedom of expression, although this commitment has caused the platform’s market value to drop by over 70 percent since taking on the responsibility in 2022.
Despite the challenges he faces, Musk continues to push the boundaries of technology and freedom of expression, encouraging everyone to enjoy the travel opportunities in this era full of potential.
