Based on a report published by Reuters, the OpenAI team is actively exploring the potential use of the chat program “ChatGPT” in classrooms, as stated by a prominent executive.
Brad Lightcup, the Chief Operating Officer at OpenAI, mentioned during a conference in San Francisco that the company will establish a team to investigate and implement educational applications to make it a pedagogical tool.
At a recent conference held at INSEAD last week, Lightcup added: “Most educators are seeking ways to incorporate ChatGPT into curricula and teaching methodologies.”
At OpenAI, we aim to assist in deliberating on this issue and may form a team next year with a singular goal of achieving just that.
He noted that OpenAI launched its generative artificial intelligence in November last year with the support of billions of dollars from Microsoft. The chat program “ChatGPT” was released and became one of the fastest-growing applications globally. The generative AI, trained on vast amounts of data, can create entirely new content resembling human-like writing, aiding users in research paper preparation, homework completion, and even penning full-fledged novels.
Following the release of “ChatGPT”, regulators rushed to keep pace with the advancements. The European Union revised its AI legislation, and the United States began efforts to regulate artificial intelligence.
When the application was rolled out mid-academic year, educators were surprised to discover its potential for deception and plagiarism. Consequently, this sparked strong reactions leading to its ban in schools.
Lightcup stated, “Educators thought this was the worst thing ever.” Nonetheless, within a few months, educators began envisioning how “ChatGPT” could be beneficial in the educational field.
The new team at OpenAI will build upon the company’s previous work of integrating its technology into the educational process. In this context, a company spokesperson remarked, “We view artificial intelligence as an effective tool that can aid in learning and teaching, and we have been inspired by the ideas embraced by educators on how to utilize tools like ChatGPT effectively.”
