Dubai Silicon Oasis, under the jurisdiction of Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DEWA), has achieved a new joint milestone with “Dirq” company, specialized in developing artificial intelligence safety analytics solutions for road safety and traffic management.
A total of 14 smart pedestrian crossing systems have been successfully implemented in various areas of the oasis, as part of the partnership between the two parties, aiming to provide advanced capabilities and smart city solutions in Dubai Silicon Oasis.
The “Dirq” AI platform with “Recognition and Instant Communication” feature is specifically designed to accurately and reliably monitor pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. This pioneering system, the first of its kind in the region, seamlessly integrates with the road infrastructure to enhance safety measures.
By using patented behavior prediction models, this technology can activate flashing warning signals, warning lights on roads, and even traffic signal control units in anticipation of pedestrian crossings, ensuring effective intervention against any potential conflicts with vehicles approaching.
The system collects valuable data to enhance user awareness of roads and increase the speed of response by safety authorities and traffic performance. These achievements are the result of extensive testing conducted over several years to ensure the system’s safety and effectiveness.
Vision
Moamer Al Kathiri, Director of Engineering and Sustainability at DEWA, stated that the implementation of Dirq’s intelligent pedestrian crossing system in Dubai Silicon Oasis directly aligns with Dubai’s Urban Plan 2040 goals. By utilizing this advanced technology, we provide an environment that enhances innovation, safety, and sustainability. This system is an essential part of enhancing Dubai Silicon Oasis as an advanced tech hub, offering residents and business partners a smart and seamless living and working experience. We continue to collaborate with Dirq to ensure pedestrian safety and further Dubai’s smart agenda.
Dr. George Awad, CEO and Co-founder of Dirq, said, “Our partnership with DEWA aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to equip Dubai as a bike-friendly city with strong security measures and expand environmentally friendly transport options. The Authority played a crucial role in implementing our advanced smart pedestrian crossing system in Dubai Silicon Oasis. With our strong commitment to improving road safety, enabling smooth and efficient traffic flow for road users and self-driving vehicles, this achievement is highly significant. We look forward to achieving results that solidify the positive impact of our efforts in Dubai and worldwide.”
The new system’s AI algorithms are designed to monitor vehicles and other road users approaching pedestrian crossings. This capability enhances system efficiency and speeds up interactions with nearby vehicles. Additionally, the system’s control algorithms provide the necessary flexibility to activate or disable alerts and adjust their timing, allowing customization of the design based on specific crossing scenarios. Alerts can be configured to remain active for a predefined time period or as long as any object is detected in the pedestrian crossing or adjacent area. This advanced function ensures optimal safety and effective traffic management at pedestrian crossings.
The system is equipped with cutting-edge 5G technology for high-speed and low-latency responsiveness, contributing to advanced and seamless connectivity, enabling wide data collection for safety coordinates and traffic data. This system simplifies remote operation, maintenance, and configuration for the operator. In the future, the system will leverage 5G technology to effectively send safety information and alerts to connected vehicles approaching pedestrian crossings.
