It seems that the new era of building robots equipped with artificial intelligence technologies has just begun to take off.
Figure, the startup in the field of robotics valued at 2.6 billion dollars, announced its first partnership with OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, which is considered the most impressive. It is worth mentioning that the company was founded less than two years ago and has previously collaborated with companies like Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Google DeepMind, and Archer Aviation.
Brett Adcock, the co-founder and CEO of Figure, posted a promotional video of the Figure One robot on his personal account on the X social media platform. The video shows the robot’s ability to interact with surrounding objects, follow people’s commands, identify object locations, communicate with people, plan, and execute necessary tasks independently.
The robot perceives anything it sees as if you were in a science fiction movie. The robot is shown offering an apple to a human, knowing it is the only healthy food available without being told. The robot is also seen picking up trash, organizing dishes and cups away from the table. The robot was trained to use OpenAI’s large-scale vision language model (VLM) to operate the cameras on it.
It is also impressive that the robot responds with unprecedented speed, indicating extreme flexibility in its movements. There was no human controlling the robot’s movements behind the scenes, marking a significant advancement in developing general-purpose robots. It interacts smoothly with humans in a way that surpasses other robots.
The robot is still in its primitive stage and requires more work to be prepared and commercially launched for companies and individuals. The company will continue to invest billions of dollars to achieve an engineering innovation that impacts global markets, and the company’s president pledged not to use the robots for military, defense purposes, or any tasks that harm humans.
