Google has announced the development of a new feature based on artificial intelligence to protect Android operating system users from fraudulent calls, as revealed by the company during the Google I/O 2024 developers conference.
This feature aims to provide advanced and innovative protection for Android users against fraudulent calls by utilizing the Gemini Nano artificial intelligence model, which is a mini version of Gemini models that can operate on devices.
The function of this feature is to analyze conversations to detect any type of fraud or harm, and it sends an alert to the user during the call so that they can protect themselves in a timely manner.
For example, the new feature protects users of Android who are targeted by fraudulent attempts that involve soliciting personal information such as passwords or bank card numbers, or requesting urgent payment or money transfers. These attempts are usually made by scammers pretending to represent banks and official institutions.
The new feature works entirely on devices without the need for internet connection, as the Gemini Nano model monitors and analyzes calls on users’ devices without Google’s intervention and servers to ensure call privacy.
Currently, there is no information available on the activation date of the fraudulent call detection feature on the Android system, but Google announces that this feature will require a subscription for use, and more details will be provided “later in the year.”
It is likely that this feature will only be available on some smartphones, as the Gemini Nano model itself is currently only available in the Galaxy S24 series and Google Pixel 8 Pro phones, and is expected to be available in more new phones throughout this year.
