Huawei, with a group of Chinese semiconductor companies, aims to make breakthroughs in memory technologies by developing local alternatives to advanced artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia that are not allowed to be sold to China.
The Information reported that a group of Chinese chip companies, led by technology giants subject to US sanctions, are looking to develop High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) semiconductor technology by 2026, which is crucial in the artificial intelligence industry, with support from the Chinese government.
This project started last year as part of China’s initiative to provide domestic alternatives to Nvidia’s AI chips.
The initiative includes Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit, a memory chip manufacturing company sanctioned by the United States, alongside Huawei, according to The Information report.
The report also mentioned that the group relies on other Chinese chip manufacturers and packaging technology developers.
The group aims to create memory chips that support Huawei’s AI processor chips and related motherboard components.
In recent years, China has increased its investments in the domestic chip industry to reduce dependence on foreign technology and bypass US export restrictions that prevent access to advanced semiconductors, including Nvidia’s AI chips.
The US restrictions do not directly apply to exports of HBM semiconductors, despite their use of US chip technology that Huawei is restricted from accessing.
The Information also mentioned that Huawei is leading a group that includes at least one production line for HBM semiconductors, using memory chips from different companies, as part of its internal competitive strategies.
According to the report, Huawei is expected to be the main purchaser of HBM technology semiconductors.
