SDAIA, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, announced the insertion of the “Alam” model within the Watsonx platform at IBM as one of the best generative models in the Arabic language globally, during its presence at the IBM Think 2024 conference in Boston, USA for three days.
The “Alam” model for the Arabic language in its experimental stage was selected based on its compliance with global standards in the field of generative artificial intelligence on the watsonx platform. This platform is one of the most important global platforms relied upon by developers worldwide, reflecting the advanced level that the “Alam” model has reached in terms of technical capabilities in producing Arabic content in various fields such as technology, culture, literature, science, and more. Therefore, the “Alam” model is considered one of the best Arabic linguistic models globally.
The “Alam” model underwent rigorous tests and precise standards to be technically and training prepared, in order to qualify to compete with other generative models. Today, it has been crowned by launching its experimental version on the IBM-owned watsonx platform for professional evaluation and acceleration of its full capabilities, with the aim of developing a professional model that has high competitiveness in this field.
The efforts undertaken by “SDAIA” align with the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve the Arabic language regionally and internationally by disseminating and empowering it, preserving its integrity, and highlighting its importance by enhancing Arabic content in various fields to strengthen cultural diversity among nations using smart technology and available digital applications worldwide. This aims to benefit all human communities from the Arabic language, regardless of their nationalities, languages, or educational levels.
These efforts align with the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030, led by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, who continuously supports transforming the Kingdom into a global center for the latest advanced technologies and artificial intelligence-related technologies.
The “Alam” model is the first national model to provide answers to user queries in various fields in Arabic using artificial intelligence technologies. This model has been trained on a large dataset in Arabic and some content in English. Users can input texts or voice queries, which are processed and responded to in text or voice using reliable knowledge sources in the Kingdom and the Arab world.
The “Alam” project is one model of the technical projects created in collaboration between “SDAIA” and IBM to support training, research, and development programs in the field of artificial intelligence. The project aims to provide artificial intelligence initiatives at the local, Arab, and regional levels, such as improving large linguistic models, computer vision, and machine learning.
The Regional Vice President of IBM Saudi Arabia praised the effortsAyman al-Rashid, in collaboration with “Sedayah“, emphasized that this collaboration is a significant step in enhancing the use of the Arabic language in the field of generative artificial intelligence. He explained that this partnership will contribute to disseminating Arabic language models to meet linguistic and cultural needs in the region, enabling companies to provide specialized services in artificial intelligence and enhancing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s position as a leading country in this field.
Among the attendees at the conference were top executives from leading companies, experts in artificial intelligence and technology, and economic policymakers. This included: Dr. Essam bin Abdullah Al-Waqait, Director of the National Information Center at “Sedayah”, and Dr. Yasser bin Mohammed Al-Ounizan, CEO of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence at “Sedayah”, in addition to the Chairman of IBM and its CEO, Arvind Krishna.
