Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against the company “OpenAI,” which developed the “ChatGBT” app and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging that they have deviated from the original purpose of the company in developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity rather than profit.
The lawsuit was filed late on Thursday, stating that Christopher Altman and OpenAI’s co-founder, Greg Brookman, initially contacted billionaire Elon Musk to establish an open-source, non-profit company, according to Reuters.
Musk’s company lawyers in the lawsuit filed in San Francisco claimed that the focus of the Microsoft-backed company on obtaining money violates the contract. They also added that the company has fully maintained its advanced artificial intelligence model, “GBT-4”.
Musk participated in founding OpenAI in 2015 but resigned from its board in 2018. He also runs the electric car manufacturing company “Tesla” and the rocket manufacturing company “SpaceX,” and acquired “Twitter” for $44 billion in October 2022.
Last year, businessman Altman was dismissed by the former board of OpenAI, who claimed he was trying to protect the company’s mission in developing beneficial artificial intelligence for humanity. After a few days, Altman returned to the company with a new board.
The Washington Post reported that OpenAI intends to appoint several new board members in March.
The “ChatGBT” application, a chatbot application from OpenAI, became the fastest-growing software application in the world within 6 months of its launch in November 2022. This also led to the launch of competitors from chatbots for companies like Microsoft and Alphabet and other startups that leveraged the frenzy to secure billion-dollar funding.
Since its debut, “ChatGBT” has been used by companies in a variety of tasks, from summarizing documents to writing computer code. This has sparked a race among major technology companies to launch their own AI-based generative offerings.
