Medina Book Fair 2024 has hosted three panel discussions as part of its cultural program, featuring a blend of traditional heritage and modern technological advancements, with a particular focus on the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday life.
Folktales as Vessels of Cultural Values
The event kicked off with a panel titled “Folktales as Carriers of Peoples’ Values and Heritage,” moderated by Dr. Hajed Al-Harbi. Dr. Manal Al-Qathami highlighted the significance of folktales in conveying cultural values and heritage. Al-Qathami emphasized how folktales can contribute to shaping and preserving cultural identities amidst rapid social changes.
Medina in the Modern Era
The second discussion, titled “Medina in the Modern Era,” was led by Dr. Rajaa bin Ateeq Al-Muaile, a professor of modern history at the Islamic University. Dr. Al-Muaile provided an in-depth analysis of Medina’s role as a cultural and religious center in Islam. He elaborated on how this evolution has impacted the region’s economic, social, and cultural life, noting that Medina has been a hub of cultural and intellectual exchange since the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence
The third panel of Medina Book Fair, “Philosophy and Science: Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence,” was presented by Dr. Noha Al-Tayyash, a professor of data science and computer science at King Saud University. Dr. Al-Tayyash discussed the philosophical challenges posed by modern AI, suggesting that philosophy can help address these challenges and guide technological advancements for public benefit. She asserted that machines cannot replace humans in roles requiring critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, underscoring the unique value of human experiences.
AI and Enhancing Values in Children
In another discussion, Dr. Doha Anqawi, a researcher and expert in graphic design and AI at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University, explored the impact of technological acceleration and information openness on guiding children and instilling values. This discussion, titled “Employing AI to Enhance Values in Children Using Interactive Games,” concluded that electronic games are not entirely without merit. Anqawi explained that such games can stimulate creative thinking in children through interactive stages that require thought and analysis. She also noted that some augmented reality games are used to treat certain medical conditions in children, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving.
Conclusion
These panels indicate that AI is not merely a technological tool but a focal point in deep philosophical and cultural discussions. Its use can have far-reaching positive effects on society, from enhancing cultural values in children to achieving public benefits through guided technological advancements.
