Meta has revealed the launch of artificial intelligence personalities developed by creators through the AI Studio platform on Instagram, where tests will begin in the United States.
The social media company’s announcement coincided with Character.AI introducing a new feature allowing users to interact with AI-supported avatars through calls.
In a radio post, Meta’s CEO clarified that chatbots are clearly classified as AI to ensure users are aware.
Zuckerberg announced the start of early testing in the US using the AI Studio. This move will allow users to see AI from their favorite content creators and AI tailored to their interests on Instagram in the coming weeks. Currently, these bots appear in messages and are clearly labeled as AI.
Zuckerberg said, “This launch is the first prototype of AI systems, and we are continuing to develop and expand access to them for more people soon.”
He mentioned that Meta collaborated with content creators like the comedy account Wasted and the tech innovator Don Allen Stephenson III to launch initial versions of the AI-powered bots they developed.
In an interview posted on his social platforms, the Meta CEO discussed AI-powered avatar applications, stating, “There should be a variety of APIs available to meet different people’s interests.”
He emphasized that enabling every content creator on the platform to develop AI to engage with their audience and empowering small businesses to interact with customers through AI is a significant part of the strategy.
Content creators may prefer leveraging AI to communicate with their audience due to time constraints preventing them from responding to all messages received.
Zuckerberg acknowledged that AI-based avatars could evolve into an evolving form of art over time.
Meta plans to test this feature with about 50 content creators and a limited percentage of users initially, then expand the testing scope to include more people in the next two months, with the ultimate goal of a full launch by August.
At last year’s developer conference, Meta unveiled the AI Studio, allowing companies to create custom chatbots.
