In a significant move aimed at enhancing customs surveillance, the Moroccan Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes has announced the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in its various operations. This announcement is part of a strategic plan spanning the next four years, targeting commercial fraud and improving the efficiency of customs surveillance.
AI at the Core of Surveillance Operations
The Customs Administration plans to leverage AI capabilities to process images captured by scanners, along with developing predictive analytical models based on data from the Single Goods Declaration (DUM). This initiative is expected to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of fraud detection operations.
Upgrading the Information System and Enhancing Intelligence
Among the key measures announced by the administration is the integration of its intelligence unit into the existing information system and the digitization of the processing of international administrative assistance requests. Additionally, a specialized intelligence database will be established to improve risk assessment and more effectively direct surveillance operations.
Improving Selectivity and Resource Allocation
According to the report issued by the Customs Administration, the current selectivity system will be enhanced by targeting the most suspicious operations, through the addition of new targeting criteria based on data related to the value of goods, disputes, and transport companies. These measures aim to bolster pre-emptive monitoring and guide real-time surveillance more effectively, contributing to the anticipation of potential risks and the prevention of fraud.
Advanced Technologies to Ensure Security and Safety of Goods Flow
The administration is also working to enhance the use of advanced technologies such as electronic seals and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). These technologies aim to improve the monitoring of transport operations and ensure the security and safety of goods flow in ports by accurately tracking containers and transport vehicles.
Improving Service Quality and Enhancing Competitiveness
The Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes affirmed that these measures will positively contribute to improving the competitiveness of businesses by reducing customs procedures and enhancing the quality of services provided. The administration’s commitment to rigorously combating all forms of commercial fraud and exposing fraudulent practices by some smugglers will also enhance the business environment.
By leveraging AI tools and advanced technology, the Moroccan Customs Administration aims to provide a fair competitive environment that contributes to the prosperity of the national economy. These steps are part of a comprehensive strategy to keep pace with global technological advancements and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of customs operations.
