OpenAI, a leading developer of artificial intelligence technologies, plans to manufacture its own artificial intelligence chips in collaboration with TSMC, the Taiwanese giant, the world’s largest chip manufacturer.
OpenAI is currently seeking investors to fund its new project and has reached out to investors in the Middle East, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Mubadala Investment Company, ADQ, and G42, a company specializing in artificial intelligence.
The discussions aim to establish an independent company to develop artificial intelligence chips, with OpenAI itself being its largest client.
TSMC is one of the “foundry” chip manufacturers, meaning it does not design the chips itself but manufactures them based on designs provided by other companies.
Both OpenAI and TSMC declined to comment on the recent report.
Through its new project, OpenAI aims to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA, a leading company in artificial intelligence chip production. If successful, OpenAI may be able to compete with NVIDIA in the future as demand for artificial intelligence chips increases globally.
Artificial intelligence chips are essential for developing and operating artificial intelligence systems. The pace of advancement in artificial intelligence depends on the efficiency and availability of these chips in large quantities. Therefore, major companies in the artificial intelligence field plan to secure their needs independently from chip manufacturers.
OpenAI is currently working on a new release of its own artificial intelligence model, expected to be launched this year as a significant upgrade to its current GPT-4 model, leading to an increased demand for artificial intelligence chips.
