OpenAI sent an email to creative developers who are building useful tools for the smart chatbot ChatGPT, requesting them to switch their work to GPTs.
The email thanked the developers, saying: “We would like to thank you for your interest in developing add-ons for the chatbot ChatGPT. We have benefited from these add-ons and have created GPTs.”
Many developers have transitioned to the platform X to discuss the removal of add-ons from ChatGPT.
The supported language models and enhancements provide practical options for the chatbot ChatGPT, however, there are key differences that make developers prefer additional uses.
The main difference is that GPTs are designed with a chat interface without the need for coding instruction within ChatGPT, whereas add-ons were built using coding instructions outside ChatGPT.
While add-ons resemble a connected application to the chatbot ChatGPT, GPTs resemble a chatbot with specific knowledge and instructions.
GPTs technology is suitable for regular individuals, however, add-ons offer more features, making developers lean towards favoring add-ons.
In a post on X, Logan Kilpatrick, OpenAI’s developer relations head, stated that add-ons have not disappeared yet, and confirmed that they are simply a reminder for all developers who have joined the waiting list and have not been able to access it, that OpenAI has launched GPTs.
Kilpatrick added in another post: “Now you can do all the work you were doing using add-ons with GPTs. I imagine most people will move to GPTs as soon as the GPT store is launched.”
Many add-ons for the chatbot ChatGPT have been developed since its launch in March 2023, and these add-ons include contributions from a limited number of companies, such as Expedia, Instacart, and Kayak.
On November 6th, OpenAI removed add-ons from the main screen of the chatbot ChatGPT, making them difficult to access.
A user on the X platform said: “As a developer of add-ons, the add-ons outperform custom GPTs. I strongly hope that OpenAI does not gradually abandon add-ons because it is crucial for us to continue to access these powerful tools and advance in AI applications.”
