OpenAI has announced the launch of a university-focused version of the artificial intelligence robot ChatGPT, named ChatGPT Edu, according to the company’s official statement.
This new version aims to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into the educational system to benefit students, faculty, researchers, and administration, at a lower subscription cost compared to corporate subscriptions.
ChatGPT Edu leverages the capabilities of the GPT-4o model recently introduced by the company to utilize advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The educational version is equipped with security and monitoring systems similar to those used in corporations.
In response to criticisms faced by the ChatGPT robot from some universities, OpenAI has affirmed its successful collaborations with prestigious universities such as Oxford University, Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas, University of Arizona, and Columbia University.
The applications of artificial intelligence in higher education are diverse and can be utilized in providing private lessons for students, reviewing resumes to help them find job opportunities, supporting researchers in writing academic papers and collecting and analyzing data, and aiding faculty members in correcting and evaluating student work.
One practical example presented by OpenAI is the use of a custom model of ChatGPT trained on university course materials, to assist students in gaining a deep understanding of those subjects.
ChatGPT Edu offers a range of features, including access to the GPT-4o model known for its advanced capabilities in text comprehension, programming, and mathematics processing. It also includes advanced features for data analysis, web browsing, and document summarization. Furthermore, custom versions of ChatGPT can be built and shared within the university environment.
The educational version of ChatGPT Edu provides a higher message limit compared to the free version, with improvements in language quality and speed. The version supports over 50 different languages and ensures data privacy protection. OpenAI also commits to not using conversations and data to train its future models.
