Sam Altman Returns to the Scene: Report on His Appointment as General Manager of OpenAI

The newspaper “Economic Times” reported that Sam Altman is currently in discussions with members of the OpenAI board, with the potential return to his position as the company’s CEO.

The newspaper quoted informed sources, who refused to disclose their identities, that the ongoing negotiations may not yield the desired results. These negotiations are taking place between Altman and at least one board member, who is Adam D’Angelo. The scope of the discussions also includes some OpenAI investors who are pushing for his reinstatement.

A source mentioned that a possible scenario is being discussed, involving Altman’s return to the company in a transitional board director role.

These negotiations are seen as a significant development in the thrilling events within the company, which saw its board dismissed Altman unexpectedly last Friday, and in the following days, the board members refused to engage with the ousted CEO.

Most employees at OpenAI have signed a letter targeting the board, threatening collective resignation if the board does not resign and reappoint former CEO Sam Altman.

In response to the letter, the company’s Deputy Head of Global Affairs, Anna Makango, sent a memo to employees stating that the company is engaged in “intense discussions” with the board, Altman, and the new CEO, Emmett Shear, aiming to unify the company.

The board has faced internal and external criticisms following its sudden decision to dismiss Altman without providing clear and convincing reasons. As a result, the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, publicly expressed not receiving any clarification on the matter.

Microsoft is the largest contributor to OpenAI, and after Altman’s dismissal, he was immediately hired, and the door was opened for employees who wish to join after leaving the company.

The board decided to dismiss the company’s president, Greg Brockman, who then joined Microsoft.
