A report from the UK’s Public Policy Research Institute has indicated that about 8 million jobs in the UK are at risk due to advancements in artificial intelligence.
The British agency “B Media” mentioned that a report conducted by the Public Policy Research Institute highlighted that the UK is facing a “moment of change” regarding the implementation of smart technology. The report identified two main stages for adopting smart technology: the current first wave that could pose a threat to administrative jobs and customer service, with women and young people being disproportionately affected. And the second wave, which will see a greater impact from artificial intelligence in companies, as around 59% of tasks performed by workers could be replaced by AI if no intervention is made.
In the second stage of artificial intelligence technology, the report showed the positives and negatives of various scenarios, based on the role of the British government in implementing a fair industrial strategy.
The worst-case scenario of the second wave of artificial intelligence is expected to result in the loss of around 7.9 million jobs and no increase in GDP.
However, the report indicated that if the government and business sectors take proactive measures to protect workers with the increasing use of artificial intelligence, this could lead to significant economic gains.
In the best scenario of the second wave, no jobs will be eliminated, but will continue with advancements in artificial intelligence, potentially contributing to a 13% increase in GDP and achieving around £306 billion (US$386 billion) annually.
