Spotify has initiated testing a tool supported by artificial intelligence that will enable podcast creators to translate their episodes into different languages. The audio streaming platform utilized generative artificial intelligence (AI) to allow podcast hosts to automatically provide versions of their programs in additional languages, while maintaining their voice in all translated versions.
The company states that they are utilizing a speech generation technology recently unveiled by OpenAI, the creator of the ChatGPT chatbot, to introduce a new translation feature that is claimed to preserve the original speaker’s style, as reported by gadgets360.
The streaming platform announced that the translated audio episodes from podcast creators – in English – part of the testing program, will be available in French, German, and Spanish in the coming weeks. These episodes will be accessible to users on both the free and premium tiers in all countries where Spotify is available.
Spotify claims that the tool using speech generation technology from OpenAI is capable of mimicking the podcast host’s speaking style. Unlike dubbed episodes, the audio translation feature will provide a more personal and authentic experience. This feature will enable listeners in the region to listen to the episode in the host’s voice, according to the live streaming service.
The new audio translation tool is currently being tested with podcast hosts Bill Simmons, Dax Shepard, Lex Fridman, Monica Padman, and Steven Bartlett. The platform will soon showcase some of their current episodes in French, German, and Spanish.
The episodes released by the podcast team will also be automatically translated into Arabic according to the platform. Spotify also indicates that the upcoming new podcast from Trevor Noah is expected to receive support from the automatic translation tool upon its launch later this year.
