The prestigious title of word of the year was awarded to Artificial Intelligence by Collins Dictionary, abbreviated as “AI”, a term that means “imitating and simulating human mental functions using computer programs”.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, Alex Pickroft, the managing director of Collins, stated that the usage of the word, as monitored through the Collins database, always sparks interest, and there is no doubt that it has been a hot topic for everyone in 2023.
The ChatGPT model, an AI-powered chat system, was released in November 2022 and quickly reached 100 million users within just two months, indicating a shift of Artificial Intelligence from a specialized tech field to a significant center of conversations and news.
The choice of the word “Artificial Intelligence” as the word of the year came as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak welcomed experts and industry leaders to Park Bletchley for the inaugural AI Summit.
Pickroft explained that Artificial Intelligence has been a major focus this year, evolving rapidly and becoming ubiquitous in our lives, like email, live streaming, and any other future technology used daily.
However, Artificial Intelligence was not the sole focus for people this year, as words related to health, pop culture, and financial affairs continued to excel in the Collins shortlist.
