/WAM/ At the meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Imran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Advanced Science and Technology Affairs, presented a discussion on the impact of artificial intelligence on hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation, outlining the UAE’s priorities in adopting an international framework for governing artificial intelligence.
Emphasizing the importance of appreciating diversity and differences to develop artificial intelligence in a suitable national or regional context while avoiding economic disparities between developed and developing countries.
The meeting of the council – held in an Arria format and organized by the UAE and Albania in collaboration – aims to address the challenges of artificial intelligence, which include the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation in the context of maintaining international peace and security.
The meeting discussed strategies aimed at addressing these issues and consolidating international cooperation and enhancing preventive measures and self-regulation through public and private partnerships.
The benefits of artificial intelligence in developing technology, achieving sustainable development, and international job opportunities were highlighted in facing concerns related to artificial intelligence.
The importance of comprehensive global policies, knowledge exchange, and capacity building to address the challenges of governing artificial intelligence was emphasized. Knowledge and expertise should be used to direct artificial intelligence towards making ethical decisions that support inclusivity, tolerance, and prosperity rather than controlling outcomes and consequences.
It is important to avoid further global extremism in efforts to develop the international framework for governing artificial intelligence and to continue cooperation and information exchange to identify best practices that ensure addressing the misuse of this technology. Today’s discussion contributes to informing the international community about the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence and the steps that can be taken to address related challenges.
Speaking were Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Rahef Harfoush, Anthropologist and Advisory Board Member of the UN Secretary-General’s Artificial Intelligence, and Jennifer Woodard, Co-Founder of the “Insight Intelligence” Foundation.
Note that the UAE’s membership term on the United Nations Security Council as an elected member will end by the end of this month, and during this period, the UAE’s capability in development and technology was confirmed through its application in enhancing international peace and security efforts.
