On Thursday, the United States affirmed that it will not rely on artificial intelligence technology in making decisions related to nuclear weapons.
These affirmations come ahead of a summit that will bring together US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping next week.
In a statement issued by the US State Department spokesperson Ned Price, the United States expressed its belief that artificial intelligence has the ability to enhance global security, emphasizing the need to use it responsibly and ethically.
Price added that the United States is committed to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and will not use artificial intelligence in nuclear decision-making. These statements come in light of concerns about China’s use of artificial intelligence in developing advanced nuclear weapons.
At the same time, The New York Times reported on Wednesday that China is working on developing a nuclear weapons program that relies on artificial intelligence and is capable of making decisions about missile launches without human intervention, with no comment from China on these reports.
