The Trends Research and Advisory Center, in collaboration with its strategic partners, organized a comprehensive scientific seminar titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Healthcare Quality: Insights from Opinion Poll Results.” The seminar, moderated by Trends researcher Maryam Al Junaibi, brought together an elite group of experts and specialists in the fields of health and technology. Participants unanimously emphasized the pivotal and growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing the healthcare sector.
Artificial Intelligence: An Indispensable Partner
Despite rapid advancements in AI technologies, experts highlighted that the goal is not to replace doctors with robots, but to augment their capabilities and improve the quality of healthcare. AI applications are already being used in diagnosing diseases, analyzing tumors, and interpreting radiological images, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of medical procedures.
The Importance of Community Awareness
Seminar participants stressed the need to raise awareness of AI technologies among Arab communities to ensure a deeper understanding and broader utilization of these innovations. AI technologies not only help reduce treatment costs and manage human resources efficiently but also boost productivity and improve the research and innovation environment. Nonetheless, challenges such as ensuring privacy, security, and robust technological infrastructure remain.
Opportunities and Challenges
Dr. Soham Al Murr, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the American University in Cairo, noted that Trends’ opinion poll results revealed a knowledge gap among participants regarding AI in the health sector. Although only 4% of the respondents worked in healthcare, a mere 10% were aware of AI technologies used in the field. This underscores the necessity for sustainable training programs and workshops to prepare healthcare workers to handle these new technologies.
Challenges: Privacy and Policies
Dr. Iyad Sultan from the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan expressed his surprise at the lack of awareness among young people about AI technologies, despite their significant benefits in diagnosing diseases and analyzing medical tests and radiological images. Dr. Ahmed Samir from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina added that public concerns about cyberattacks greatly contribute to their hesitation in adopting AI technologies.
A Forward-Looking Perspective
Dr. Samar Sabih from Moharram & Associates for Public Policy and Strategic Communication stressed the importance of establishing specific policies and strategies to promote AI usage in medical fields, considering ethical and security aspects to build community trust.
Closing Remarks
Dr. Hamed Yahya from the Dubai Health Authority highlighted the prominent role of AI in enhancing diagnostic capabilities and effectively managing resources. However, the success of this transformation requires high-level infrastructure technologies, substantial financial investments, and the development of policies and laws governing the use of these technologies.
In conclusion, the ambitions and challenges of AI in healthcare remain a topic of ongoing discussion among experts and decision-makers, aiming for a healthier, more innovative, and sustainable future.
