(TASS) – Türkiye is exploring the integration of the Russian S-400 air defense system into its multi-layered air defense network, the “Iron Dome,” which is currently being developed using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to reports from the “Hurriyet” newspaper.
During a meeting of the Turkish Defense Industry Executive Committee chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on August 6, plans to enhance Türkiye’s air defense capabilities through AI technologies were discussed. “TRT Haber” confirmed that Türkiye is working on establishing a comprehensive air defense system that aims to employ the latest technologies.
Defense and security analyst Turan Oğuz stated, “The S-400 missile systems can be integrated into this system. Since it is our national system, we can connect the S-400 to it.” This integration will bolster Türkiye’s air defense capabilities, adding an additional layer of security against aerial threats.
Local Development and Intelligent Integration
Turkish company “Aselsan” is spearheading the creation of the air defense system and has already commenced testing. The new system includes the integration of other air defense systems such as “Korkut,” “Hisar,” and “Saber,” enhancing the system’s comprehensiveness and efficiency.
Türkiye acquired four S-400 air defense batteries from Russia for $2.5 billion. In October 2019, “Rosoboronexport” confirmed the contract execution. However, this cooperation resulted in Türkiye’s exit from the U.S. F-35 next-generation fighter program.
Türkiye’s History of AI Innovation
This is not the first time Türkiye has employed AI in its defense initiatives. Türkiye has developed autonomously operated drones like the Bayraktar TB-2 and Akıncı, which utilize AI to identify and track targets.
The Kemankeş family of loitering munitions combines features of drones and cruise missiles, operating independently with AI-supported autopilot systems. Additionally, Roketsan has introduced the Alka directed energy weapon system, which uses lasers to disrupt and destroy targets.
Future Vision and National Strategy
Türkiye is advancing future soldier technologies such as the Tactical Operations Kit (ATOK), which enhances situational awareness for forces through AI. BITES has produced AI-based virtual/augmented reality solutions to provide realistic simulation environments for soldier training.
Türkiye’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2021-2025 outlines plans to strengthen the nation’s AI ecosystem, increase the number of AI experts, and make AI a central component of Türkiye’s military capabilities. Türkiye is rapidly advancing its use of AI in autonomous systems, sensors, and decision support to gain an edge in modern warfare.
Conclusion
By integrating the S-400 into the intelligent air defense system “Iron Dome,” Türkiye continues to make rapid strides in enhancing its defense capabilities using cutting-edge AI technologies, positioning itself at the forefront of advanced nations in this field.
