In an ambitious move to inspire the next generation of leaders in artificial intelligence, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has teamed up with 42 Abu Dhabi and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) to launch a series of AI Summer Programs. These initiatives are meticulously designed to equip Abu Dhabi students with cutting-edge AI skills, thereby reshaping industries and pioneering future technological advancements.
A Strategic Partnership for Future-Readiness
ADEK’s strategic collaborations underscore a strong commitment to innovation and future-readiness. The AI Summer Programs are tailored for 2,400 students from grades 9 to 12, encompassing public, private, and charter schools. These meticulously curated programs delve into the fundamentals of generative AI, explore ethical considerations, foster new AI concept development, and guide students through potential career paths in AI.
Generative AI and Prompt Engineering Bootcamps
In collaboration with 42 Abu Dhabi, the Generative AI and Prompt Engineering Bootcamps offer hands-on learning experiences that enhance problem-solving skills and prepare students for future challenges. The bootcamps are divided into two formats to cater to diverse learning preferences:
- Intensive Full-Day Bootcamps: Held across six schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra, these bootcamps provide an immersive experience. Over four consecutive weeks, students dive deep into generative AI and prompt engineering, focusing on advanced techniques such as fine-tuning language models. The intensive format includes three directed training sessions per day, offering practical, beginner-friendly AI tools.
- Tailor-Made 2-Hour Sessions: Conducted in collaboration with Majalis Abu Dhabi at the Presidential Court’s Citizens and Community Affairs Office, these sessions cater to Emirati students. Held in 28 locations across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra, these sessions cover AI fundamentals, real-life applications, and interactive group exercises that build foundational knowledge.
Specialized Workshops with MBZUAI
In another unique opportunity, ADEK, in collaboration with MBZUAI, offers a five-day summer program specifically for grade 11 students. This program provides insights into various AI applications, including film production, generative AI, responsible AI, and sustainability research projects. Esteemed faculty, alumni, and students from MBZUAI lead these workshops, ensuring students receive top-tier AI education.
Preparing for the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI)
ADEK’s collaboration with MBZUAI also extends to preparing Emirati students for the inaugural International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI). This prestigious competition, taking place from 9-15 August in Bulgaria, aims to inspire and challenge high school students passionate about AI. Two MBZUAI students will mentor the team, ensuring they are well-prepared to compete on the global stage.
A Commitment to AI Excellence
Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, ADEK Undersecretary, emphasized the importance of these programs, stating, “We are committed to preparing a generation ready for the evolving AI landscape. The AI Summer Programs will empower young minds to drive meaningful global change. By partnering with world-leading institutions like 42 Abu Dhabi and MBZUAI, we ensure Abu Dhabi’s youth receive best-in-class AI training.”
Broader AI and Technology Engagement in Dubai
In a parallel initiative, the Emirates Science Club at the Dubai Culture and Science Club honored 280 participants of its July summer course, which included AI and data analysis workshops among other topics. The course featured 11 workshops and 220 lectures, covering subjects like cybersecurity, sustainability, general chemistry, 3D printing, robotics, and more. This event, attended by prominent figures such as Bilal Al Budoor and Dr. Issa Al Bastaki, showcased various technological innovations and celebrated Global Moon Day on July 20, 2024.
The AI Summer Programs in Abu Dhabi and the complementary initiatives in Dubai reflect a broader commitment to fostering a new generation of AI experts, poised to lead in an increasingly AI-driven world.
