Half of the students included in the random sample from the famous British university of Cambridge confirmed their use of artificial intelligence applications, specifically the ChatGPT application, in their research and studies, according to a survey conducted by The Times newspaper.
The students stated that artificial intelligence, instead of relying on millions of documents and references, provides them with the information they need, and with little effort, they can filter and use this information.
Some students admitted to violating the rules and using artificial intelligence in remote exams and in required research projects for their graduation and in other study matters.
They see it as a normal practice that saves them a lot of effort in searching for information or verifying it, even in the writing process.
400 male and female students from the prestigious Cambridge University participated in the newspaper survey, with 47% of them admitting to using “ChatGPT” specifically in their studies to get logical answers to test questions or research.
University Regulations
Using smart technology in studying is prohibited at the university, and it is considered a form of cheating and students who engage in this behavior are expelled from their studies if caught.
One student commented on this issue: “I find artificial intelligence programs that provide me with answers and explanations that align with my thinking and are more logical than answers I get from some teachers, specifically ChatGPT has become a skilled companion in the learning process for us to refer to in complex issues and to understand concepts, and sometimes to find solutions.”
Although many Cambridge users adopt artificial intelligence applications, some believe that it should be limited as it leads to incorrect methods and misleading information. Others believe that it undermines human ability to research and innovate by relying excessively on such technologies.
According to the university, the use of artificial intelligence applications by some students does not diminish their efforts in studying and researching for information. The university believes that artificial intelligence should remain complementary and assistant, and cannot replace human efforts.
