Many writers and novelists agree that the story is the captivating factor for the audience in creative works, especially in this era intertwined with social media and dispersion which makes the audience prefer quick content.
A panel discussion titled “Art of Engaging Readers through Dramatic Shifts” was held as part of the 42nd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair, featuring British novelist Felix Francis, Jordanian playwright Mufleh Falah Alduwan, and Emirati novelist Dr. Mishaal Al Naboodah.
The session delved into discussing artificial intelligence technologies, with the speakers emphasizing the importance of utilizing and harnessing them. They pointed out that this technology, like other modern technologies that emerged in the past and piqued interest, has now become an essential part of our lives.
Dr. Mishaal Al Naboodah stated that the challenges facing reading are increasing with the rapid evolution of content provided by social media platforms. The audience now prefers quick ideas, information, and content over reading. Overcoming these challenges requires the writer to have an understanding of readers’ preferences, put themselves in their shoes, grasp their thought process, and give voice to their authentic voices.
In this context, Dr. Mufleh Alduwan emphasized the importance of encouraging the audience to discuss issues close to them. He pointed out that the theatre gets closer to the reader, addressing critical issues through works that reflect contemporary subjects. This is not surprising as theatre is the parent of arts, and direct communication with the audience is its fundamental requirement, thus making the audience an integral part of the theatrical work.
In his study, British writer Felix Francis highlights the importance of the story in creative work. He believes that everything in the era of social media has become fast-paced and urgent, underscoring the significance of having an enticing story to attract and engage the reader with literary works.
The panel also discussed the role of artificial intelligence in literature and some concerns about its impact on creativity. The speakers agreed that it is wise to understand, utilize, and benefit from artificial intelligence, drawing on the emergence of many inventions in the past that were met with fears and resistance.
The speakers highlighted that technology will not crush the human emotions that are essential in the creative process. Artificial intelligence can be a positive factor in reducing human’s oppressive behaviors, which manifest in various fields such as human encroachment on the environment.
