A state of chaos has emerged within OpenAI, as the majority of employees have threatened to resign unless the current board of directors is changed and Sam Altman is reinstated as CEO and Greg Brockman as former president.
According to a report from the American site Wired, a petition was signed by around 500 employees, including many executives, threatening resignation, indicating that the company currently has only about 700 employees.
The message directed to the board represents the latest development in a series of events that started on Friday afternoon when the OpenAI board decided to dismiss Sam Altman for lack of transparency in communication with the board.
The result was that the board felt a lack of confidence in Altman’s ability to continue leading the startup, while Greg Brockman, the company’s president, announced his resignation due to unexpected decisions on his part.
Another significant development occurred in the past few hours, as Microsoft announced the appointment of Altman and Brockman, along with several other former colleagues from OpenAI, to lead a new research team in advanced artificial intelligence.
Currently, Microsoft is the largest investor in OpenAI, using its technologies to develop and operate AI-powered products, such as Copilot.
